Newcastle United is undoubtedly one of the fastest-growing English Premier League teams in the last 3 years. After the Saudi take-over in 2020, the English team fully focused on squad building with the help of Saudi funds.
Newcastle United has the sixth-highest net spending in world football over the last decade and fourth highest spending in four years since 2019, according to the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES).
Newcastle United has passed through a bad patch in the last decade and after the PIF takeover in 2020, their fortune has turned around.
In the 2022-23 season, Newcastle ended fourth in the English Premier League table and will play in the Champions League at the end of the month. Supporters are getting ready for the biggest event of club football after 18 long years.
The Magpies have spent almost $600m or £515m since 2019, which started with the signings of Joelinton from 1899 Hoffenheim and Allan Saint-Maximin from French club NICE under Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley.
They also had a few big signings next season like Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis before Saudi took ownership of the club.
Since then we have witnessed a few signings with hefty wages like Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak, and Sandro Tonali who can help the newly promoted club in the Champions League.
But the most suspicious thing for Newcastle United is player selling. Like other clubs, we haven’t seen the club sell the players often. Very few big names only left the club so far in this duration. Ayoze Perez’s move to Leicester City in 2019, Saint-Maximin’s departure to Al Ahli (2023), and Chris Wood’s move to Nottingham (2023) are only a few notable player sales for the club. None of them was sold for more than €35m.
The club is on the verge of breaking the Financial Fair Play rules due to its inability to sell the existing players at a good price. Watching their sales over a few years, it is easy to guess the club is outspending like PSG, Juventus, and Barcelona.
