Everyone loves a great Hollywood courtroom drama especially when it is based on a real-life event. Directed by Maggie Betts, “The Burial” is such a courtroom drama that is as entertaining as well as thought-provoking. The movie tells a so-satisfying story of a huge corporation brought to its knees by a family-run business.
“The Burial”: A Tale of Courtroom Drama:
The Burial is now available on Prime Video, directed by Maggie Betts and produced by Jamie Foxx and Bobby Shriver. Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, and Alan Ruck are in the main roles.
Storyline:
In 1995, Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx) an unconventional personal injury lawyer with an impressive track record, helped his client Jeremiah O’Keefe (a financially troubled funeral homeowner) to sue a large funeral home company Loewen Group over a contractual dispute. Jamie Foxx portrayed the role of Gary whereas Tommy Lee Jones played the role of Jeremiah.
The story is based on a real case, but there are many differences between the movie and the actual case. The Loewen Group offered a contract to Jeremiah to purchase 35% stakes in his Mississippi-based business. But later Loewen’s group refused to complete the contract and it led Jeremiah into financial trouble.
Bill Camp played the role of a heartless and unctuous businessman Raymond Loewen to perfection. Everything about Bill looks so hateful and detestable from his multi-million dollar yacht to shrimp cocktails.
Jeremiah’s young lawyer and family friend Dockins (Mamoudou Athi) gave him the idea to visit Willie Gary when his former lawyer Allred rejected the idea. From the top, it looks like a comedy and larger-than-life film, but director Maggie Betts and Writer Doug Wright did an excellent job of balancing the personalities with the courtroom pressure.
Are there any changes from the actual event?
However, it is based on actual events but it doesn’t follow the real event strictly. The creators have re-gendered all the attorneys into Black women, including Jurnee Smollett’s powerful Mame Downes which gave the whole legal unit a “Black” vibe.
Maggie explained she did it intentionally in order to make black people completely self-sufficient, so they don’t need any white people in their life. For the majority of the duration, it seems to be a boring drama but if you keep patience, you’ll definitely enjoy the climax.
