Netflix’s “The Devil on Trial” is Based on One of the Unique Legal Cases

Netflix’s latest horror documentary series “The Devil on Trial” is a real and unique legal case that was released on October 17, 2023. This is a unique legal case not only in the USA but also in the world where the defense pleaded demonic possession. In this series, you’ll find a compilation of actual recordings to give an insight into brutal crime and legal strategies.

You might be familiar with this case if you have watched “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” which was released in 2021. However, it is understandable that the movie makers made some changes to fit it for the movie.

The movie and the documentary both covered the real-life murder and its preceding events of Arne Cheyenne Johnson who was accused of manslaughter of his landlord Alan Bono. Famous paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren were also involved in the infamous trial.

What happened with Arne Cheyenne?

In 1981, the 40-year-old landowner Alan Bono was killed by 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson. It was claimed during court proceedings that Arne was possessed by the Devil and committed the brutal murder of his landlord under supernatural influence.

How did it begin?

The paranormal activities began a few months ago when Johnson’s girlfriend’s 11-year-old brother David started to show some paranormal symptoms. David suddenly started to speak Latin which he learned. From being thrown into the air to beating marks on his body, everything was present in David.

It was assumed that after leaving David, the demon-possessed Johnson. This led to the death of Alan when the devil instructed Johnson to stab Alan with a five-inch folding knife, according to the defense lawyer.

It is said that before Ed and Lorraine Warren arrived, the Catholic priest tried and failed to drive the demon away. It was so difficult that even Warrens said that it was one of the most difficult challenges in their entire career.

What happened next?

Arne was convicted of first-degree homicide of his landlord Alan Bono and sentenced to imprisonment for 10-20 years. But five years later, in 1986 he was released and married his girlfriend Debbie Glatzel and even got his High School diploma while in prison. Lorraine wrote in her book, “The Devil in Connecticut with Gerald Brittle”, that Arne was working as an assistant to Alan. The above-written book was the foundation of the movie, “The Conjuring 3”.

Where is Arne Johnson now?

Arne and Debbie both were associated with the making of “The Conjuring 3” and “The Devil on Trial”. But unfortunately, Debbie passed away while releasing “The Conjuring 3” in 2021 due to cancer. As of now, there is no news of Arne but in 2019, he was working as a landscaper.
