A football club is often popular for its rich history in football. Manchester United is not an exception.
Nowadays, Manchester United are not performing good enough in the Premier League. But it doesn’t show how rich history the club possesses.
A person who started to watch football in 2015, might think Manchester City is the best club in Manchester. But once Sir Alex Ferguson said, in his lifetime Manchester City will never be a favorite club in the Manchester Derby. But now, it is every time happening.
Why the downfall occurs in Manchester United it’s debatable but here we can look at points why Manchester United has a large fan following around the world despite its downfall:
Why Manchester United is so popular?
Since its inception in 1878 as “Newton Heath LYR F.C.”, Manchester United proved to be one of the most successful clubs in England over the years. As of 2023, Manchester United managed to bag 67 trophies which is just behind Liverpool (68).
Manchester United has won 12 FA Cups, six League Cups, and a record 21 FA Community Shields, 3 Champions League, 1 Europa League and many more. A Manchester United fan might be disappointed with the club’s recent performance but its performance in the past is astonishing.
The impressive 1990-2010:
Manchester United’s run in all competitions between 1990 and 2010 was very impressive. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the club was proved to be an invincible force.
Manchester United is always remembered for producing legends like Bobby Charlton, Erik Cantona, George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Vidic, Van Der Saar, Peter Schmeichel, etc. It is clear that many football fans were the fans of the superstars and started to watch football after watching them in United jerseys.
English Premier League titles:
English Premier League is considered the most competitive football league in the world. Winning the most number of League titles (20) is not everyone’s cup of tea. Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, the Red Devils managed to win them an impressive 13 times. You’ll be surprised to know their last title came in the 2012-13 season.
Having no other options:
At the beginning of 2000, there were not many options to watch football. In many countries, only premier league matches were telecasted. So, fans had no options other than to watch the English Premier League and idolize their players. Being the most successful club in England, Manchester United received most of the fans around the world that time.
